During the Roman period, this promontory was first used as a cemetery and later as a quarry. During the Byzantine rule some Christians had settled in the Roman Tombs and in these quarries. The St. Mavra Church is in such a Roman rock tomb. There are frescoes on its walls and on its ceiling.
